This ever-changing ride along the south coast of Iceland will take you
through lava fields, across high barren heaths, past notorious volcanoes
and through colourful villages. You will eventually reach the extensive
black sands of Skeiðarársandur, a desolate area beneath the vast
Vatnajökull Icecap.
Powerful glacial rivers sweep down into the
moody Atlantic Ocean carrying millions of tons of black volcanic grit,
constantly altering the shape of the coastline to create a sombre black
desert. Rising majestically above this scene is Hvannadalshnjúkur,
Iceland’s highest peak at 2110 m.
Jökulsárlón is a glacial
lagoon at the foot of a retreating glacier tongue. Icebergs of all
shapes, sizes and hues calve off from the glacier and float in the
lagoon. You will have time to walk along the shores of this surreal
stretch of icy water to see the fantastic shapes and mirror-like
reflections on the tranquil surface.
Take a trip aboard an
amphibious vehicle – drive out into the lake to get an even closer look
at the towering blocks of ice. This was the setting for the sensational
opening scenes of the James Bond film Die Another Day.
