Þórsmörk is a surprising area of verdant woodland enclosed by three
glaciers at the foot of the notorious volcano Eyjafjallajökull,
accessible only by large, well-equipped 4x4 vehicles.
The
Þórsmörk tour will take you along rugged mountain tracks and through
swirling glacial rivers to reach the gloriously remote Þórsmörk valley,
where a fantastic landscape of glaciers and rock faces surrounds the
tranquil greenery. Pass close to the lagoon at the foot of Gígjökull
glacier, where flood waters gushed down the mountainside during the
eruption in early 2010. Stroll through ancient woodland or take an
adventurous peek into the dark narrow canyons.
Powerful 4x4 jeeps
are customised in Iceland to handle the tough conditions in the
highlands and on glaciers. They are comfortable and fully equipped for
rugged tracks and difficult fjords.
